Congratulations to all who performed in the Spring Recital on June 4! It was really nice to see the Baldwin-Wallace College Gamble Auditorium filled with supportive family and friends. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of playing in such a wonderful venue, with good acoustics and professional piano accompaniment. Bravo on your hard work and beautiful music making!

Additional Performance Opportunities

Periodically, the Alumni Association of The Cleveland Institute of Music hosts recitals for students of alumni. This is a unique chance to play in a recital hall in front of fellow advancing students on a variety of instruments. I am able to offer this opportunity to students who have demonstrated their ability to perform at a high level. Dates of upcoming recitals will be posted when they become available.

About Public Performance

Music is a performing art. Some arts such as painting, pottery and sculpture leave a tangible product that can be displayed and admired long after the artist has completed it. Performing arts such as dance, theatre and music occur when the artist is sharing his or her work and talent with a live audience. It is a one-time shot because it is impossible for anyone to duplicate a performance. Every time you play a piece, it will be slightly different. When you choose to study music, the reason you practice your instrument is for the opportunity to perform for others. This is the goal you are working towards: sharing your music with an audience. Does playing in front of people makes you feel nervous? You are not the only one! Everybody gets nervous. The only way to overcome performance anxiety is to perform often. Do it at home: gather your parents, family or friends and play for them. As you get more experience performing, you will feel more comfortable.
